"A teacher is one who makes himself progressively unnecessary." - Thomas Carruthers
Assessment is the backbone to education and something that needs to be seriously considered before it is used. Assessment is used in order to evaluate students: their progress, what they need help with- even their learning styles. It is a tool that will show an educator what needs to be taught and re-taught, and without assessment learning may come to a stand-still; the students may never move on to the next level of learning. It is the role of the educator to make sure that students are learning what is expected and that they are meeting the outcome requirements before moving on to the next level of study in a topic.
Assessment techniques must be intriguing for the students to carry out and it should not be a task that will take a great deal of time for the educator to do, since educators have much on their daily plate already. I learned that there are basically two types of assessment: assessment of learning and assessment for learning. The biggest difference between these two types of assessment is that assessment for learning is an evaluation tool that allows for the educator to determine where to go next, whereas assessment of learning deals with hours of correcting papers and other assignments. Assessment for learning is obviously beneficial and if used correctly, students will learn more with a hands-on approach. As a teacher, I plan to assess for learning for the benefit of my students, as well as myself.
Assessment is a tool that, when used correctly, enables students and educators alike to enjoy being in the classroom and learning new ideas without the added stress of hours of "busy work" in class, as well as homework. Of course, some homework will always be expected for both the students and educators. But when assessment is used correctly, more learning can take place and it can actually become enjoyable for everybody.
